A Guide to Seasonal Produce

Getting The Best Seasonal Foods

seasonal food

While the choice of the food that we choose to eat has been in many cases been determined by other people in past years, this situation is beginning to change.

There are a number of issues that are increasingly impacting upon your choice of foods. These include matters such as:

  • where the food was grown
  • how far it has had to travel
  • whether is has been grown organically
  • the freshness of the food

While many of us have been able to consider these issues when shopping for our home larder, it has often been more difficult for us to have the same opportunities for choice when eating out.

What About Seasonal Food Trends?

However, as this news article from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Schools about seasonal foods indicates, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of providing meals which meet a number of the desired criteria among today’s chefs.

“The importance of sourcing local seasonal food products is now being taught to catering school graduates, and this will have an ongoing impact upon our choices as restaurant patrons.

…. Culinary school graduates are being taught how to source seasonal produce and food products to create unique and varied menus for their customers.

…. One of the major components of this shift toward local, small-scale, sustainable farming is seasonal eating, where foods and produce are only consumed in season.

…. Not only do we lose flavor and nutrition in out of season produce, we lose more natural resources. More fuels and energy are consumed to get it the thousands of miles from growing areas to grocery shelves.”

  1. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
