Berries To Benefit Your Brain

Berries – A Delicious Way to Keep the Brain Young and Healthy

Having Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is more than just losing one’s ability for brain and mental functions as one advances in age. It is also about losing dignity, independence, self- esteem and identity.

Thus, it comes with comfort for older adults to know that by paying attention to diet, you stand a good chance to have a healthy brain despite aging.

The solution is quite easy and luscious too: eat berries – blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.

berriesThis was the result of a study undertaken by Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Ph.D. and Marshall G. Miller which was published by American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

The idea of strong evidence shows that eating berries benefits the brain was brought to the public’s attention as a news item in several sites including Natural News.

As we age, one of the functions that can often deteriorate dramatically is our mental function – our brain power, if you will. The good news is, researchers may have discovered a way to prevent this kind of decline: Eat more berries.

That’s right. According to research published in the American Chemical Society‘s (ACS) Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, eating more blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and other berry fruits may help prevent age-related memory loss and other mental status changes.

In the journal article, Dr. Barbara Shukitt-Hale, PhD, and Marshall G. Miller note that as we live longer on average, there are increasing concerns about the social and monetary costs of treating Alzheimer ‘s disease and other forms of mental decline. That concern will only grow as the U.S. population continues to age.

How do berries protect the brain from debilitating disorders?

The neuronal benefits that can be derived from berries are attributed to their high levels of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are cellular compounds that render protection to the body cells from the harmful effects of free radicals.

Research also shows that the inter-neuronal communication is improved by the compounds of the berry fruits as well as prevents brain inflammations.

At this point, however, the exact nature of the compounds by the different berries is still a subject of further research.

There are several other studies that support these findings by Hale and Miller (2012).

In fact, there is evidence to prove that berries are also effective in preventing other common adult diseases such as cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, and arthritis. They are also noted to be good for the eyes and in promoting weight loss.

Another study led by James Joseph PhD, revealed that when it comes to brain protection, blueberry is second to none. Blueberries topped the 24 varieties of fresh fruits, 23 vegetables, 16 herbs, 10 different nuts and 4 dried fruits that were assessed.

Old age is just a phase that people must go through.

Your quality of life need not deteriorate and, most especially, your mental power should not fade in time.

On the contrary, wisdom that has been earned through the years must stay as sharp as ever. Berries can help you achieve that.
